Glassworker's Cottage
DORFLINGER DOCUMENTARY ON GLASSWORKER'S COTTAGE TO
BE SHOWN IN HONESDALE
HONESDALE, PA - The Honesdale premiere of a locally produced video
documentary will take place on Thursday, August 18th from 6-8 PM at the
Presbyterian Chapel in Honesdale. Wayne County residents, descendants of
glassworkers and those interested in the history of the area are invited to
attend. Refreshments will be served. After brief remarks by members of the
production team, the video will be screened at 6:30. The program is open to
the public free of charge.
White Mills, Pennsylvania isn't the first place that comes to mind when you
think of a movie premiere but officials at the Dorflinger Glass Museum
believe there is no better place to introduce the new video documentary
called "The Glass Cottages of White Mills." They're right when you consider
the stars of the video are a group of historic glassworkers' houses built in
the village by famed glassmaker Christian Dorflinger in the mid-19th
century.
The video, entitled "The Glass Cottages of White Mills," documents one of
the original glass worker's homes. Produced and written by Ralph Liberto,
this entertaining and enlightening documentary includes interviews with
historians, residents and school students interspersed with historic
photographs and rare motion picture footage of glass cutters at work in the
1920s.
As the owner and resident of the first cottage built by Christian Dorflinger,
Mr. Liberto brought a unique perspective to the project: "I wrote the script
for the documentary sitting in my dining room overlooking Lollipop Pond. It
soon became apparent that an ageless voice was trying to tell the story of
the cottages in a truly unexpected and unusual manner. I just had to step
back and let it speak for itself, and tried not to get in the way!"
This lively documentary will delight history buffs, glass connoisseurs, and
anyone interested in a great story. Learn how world history had a
significant impact on the village of White Mills as it grew into what many
recognize as the premier source of the finest glassware in the world. Over
175 people attended the world premiere of the documentary in June.
Produced for the Dorflinger Glass Museum/Historic White Mills and made
possible in the form of a matching grant from the Lackawanna Heritage Valley
Authority, the National Park Service and the Pennsylvania Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources-this Ken Burns-style video spans two
centuries of triumphs and challenges of the village that grew up around the
world-famous Dorflinger glass factory.
The video runs 38 minutes and will be sold in the DVD format at $25 but a
special introductory price of $15 is available to those who purchase it at
the premiere on August 18th. The Presbyterian Chapel is located on 10th
Street on the courthouse square in Honesdale. For additional information and
reservations, call 570-253-1185.
