Judge
James Rutherford Community Service Award
The Judge James Rutherford Community Service
Award, first granted in 1993 to its namesake, was established to honor outstanding
community leadership and service to the welfare of the entire Wayne County area. It
is presented annually by the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary and the Wayne County Bar
Association.
Specific criteria for the recipient selection
process is as follows:
- The award may be received by an organization,
an individual or several individuals.
- The recipient will be chosen on the basis of
service to the community, whether for a specific activity at a given time or for service
over an extended period of time.
- The recipient will be recognized for community
service to the welfare of the general Wayne County area, but not necessarily confined to
just Wayne County. The honoree need not be a resident of Wayne County.
- There will be no restriction as to the nature
of the service. The recognition need not be constrained by definition as to the
nature of the service: volunteer, philanthropic or outstanding contributions through
one's employment (though community service is generally construed as service above and
beyond one's employment duties).
- Community service, for the purpose of the Judge
James Rutherford Community Service Award, is defined as any activity or activities that
contribute to the welfare of others. This encompasses social welfare, cultural
welfare, educational advancement, etc.
